As a past member of bands like Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts, and Dum Dum Girls, Frankie Rose has quite the midas touch. The new band plays "Beach Party" on New Years Eve at Cameo Gallery with fellow "Guest List" band Beach Fossils, as well as Surfer Blood, and We Are Country Mice. Flier and Frankie Rose track below.

Review:
FRANKIE ROSE - Thee Only One
83%

Frankie Rose has been quite a force in the Brooklyn indie-rock scene over the past couple of years. She first broke out as the original drummer and founding member of Vivian Girls. Rose wrote “Where Do You Run To”, arguably the best track on the band’s debut album. But just as Vivian Girls started gaining momentum, the prolific drummer/songwriter decided to quit the band in favor of her new one – Crystal Stilts. Of the decision, Rose explained, "When we were writing the Vivian Girls record, a lot of the songs that I wrote were inspired by Crystal Stilts…" Both bands became an indie sensation, touring relentlessly in support of two of the most exciting debut records of 2008.

Earlier this year, Rose announced that she would also leave Crystal Stilts. It was around this time that she popped up as the drummer for Dum Dum Girls’ first ever live performance. It seems that any band that Rose decides to join strikes sonic gold. With all this on your resume, why not just go it alone? Well that’s exactly what Frankie Rose has done on the new two-track single Thee Only One.

The title track vividly showcases Rose’s impeccable songwriting skills, all the while exploring the same musical landscapes as her previous bands. Classically blending the ideas of surf-rock, Phil Spector and Jesus & Mary Chain, “Thee Only One” is an infectious rock jam, with candy-coated girl group melodies to boot. On the flip side, Rose slows things down to a hypnotic, dreamlike state on the haunting and gorgeous “Hollow Life”. The track recalls the anti-80’s aural beauty of Opal’s Kendra Smith.

With only two solo songs under her belt, Frankie Rose shows impressive promise for a brightly lit future.

VIVIAN GIRLS - When I'm Gone

Vivian Girls recently released their sophomore LP Everything Goes Wrong, which is a notably darker, slightly more mature effort than the debut. Frankie Rose's absence is definitely felt, but in a sense this album feels grittier and more abstract without her. The girls have filmed a new video for the track "When I'm Gone". Check it out...

FRANKIE ROSE - Thee Only One

Frankie Rose, drummer for Crystal Stilts and formerly of Vivian Girls, has stepped up to bat with her first solo effort, the new single "Thee Only One".
"Ms. Rose's music is haunted by the ghosts of 60s girl group, Brill Building, and 80s and 90s noise pop in equal measure. It's a spooky, lovely sound -- Frankie's ethereal yet affectation-free voice swirling in a sea of church-like harmonies over a bed of tambourines, bells, and propulsive drumming. Recalling in spirit such groups as The Aislers Set and Black Tambourine, Frankie's music is both timeless and immediate, both deeply personal and completely universal."
Brooklyn Vegan reports that Rose has left Crystal Stilts to fully embark on her solo project. She will also be drumming for Dum Dum Girls when they play CMJ in New York this week.

VIVIAN GIRLS - Moped Girls/Death

Vivian Girls are set to release the new Moped Girls/Death 7" on July 5th.
"'moped girls' is one minute and 54 seconds of reverb drenched indie pop perfection that sounds like it should have been released in 1986 on the subway organization or 53rd and 3rd records. on the flip 'death' starts like a long lost 60's 'girls in the garage' nugget before turning into a much darker beast with reverb vocals and guitars taking the lead."

SXSW - Day 2
Ebony Bones, Rye Rye, Kid Cudi, Vivian Girls, Rosie and the Goldbug

-Ebony Bones

Ebony Bones made more than just a few new fans Thursday night when she commanded the stage with her bizarre and delicious blend of new wave afro-punk. Dressed garishly with oversized bracelets and giant fabric balls for sleeves, Ebony recalled the art drama of Grace Jones' live persona, but infused it with a much more high-energy dance charisma. She is rumored to be finishing her debut album and all I can say is when this one drops, watch your head! Hands down the best show I saw at SXSW this year.

M.I.A.'s new protege Rye Rye is riding a wave of hype, mostly because she is the debut artist on the star's new label N.E.E.T. The Baltimore rapper is crazy cute and mouths off a mean jam, backed by infectious techno-pop beats. Her debut drops this summer and will be insanely huge, no question. You can get her first single "Shake It To the Ground" on iTunes.

Kid Cudi gave the crowd a scare when he was nowhere to be found at show time. I think someone made an announcement that he might not show up, because a mild panic spread through the club and people started filing toward the exit. At about the same time, Cudi and his entourage stormed in through the main entrance, creating a brief frenzy. He immediately jumped up onto the stage and rambled a bit about how he is NOT retiring. I never heard that he was, but I don't stay up to date on the latest hip-hop drama. He launched into his set and all was good. Very talented guy.

-Rosie and the Goldbug

Earlier in the evening Rosie and the Goldbug of the UK played their very first US show. I had no idea who they were, but it's kinda of like what you would get if you mixed Karen O, Tori Amos, and New York Dolls. Outrageous and dancey; completely likable.

Then came Vivian Girls (yes, again) who played possibly one of their best shows to date. I have seen this band about five times now and this was by far the best one. They had charisma and humor, which is a totally new addition from my perspective. They announced they were about to play a cover song they had just learned an hour prior in a parking lot. It turned out to be Wavves' "So Bored". Later they asked the audience for requests. When no one came up with a suitable one, they launched into "So Bored" again! It was kind of fantastic. During the last song, all three girls played musical chairs in the middle of the track, changing off instruments.

No one represented SXSW for me like the Vivian Girls. It became increasingly funny how often I stumbled upon them over the course of the week. Whether it be one of their many shows or just hanging out in the background, they always seemed to be around.

SXSW - Day 1
Wavves, Vivian Girls, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and more

-Wavves

The first official day of SXSW was loaded with wonderful performances all over the place. I spent the daylight hours at the Forcefield/Terrorbird blow out at Red 7 and caught a really brief, but awesome set by Wavves. Backed with just a drummer, he lived up to the hype machine surrounding his new album. I was also really taken with his jovial stage presence and his frequent use of the word "psych".

The band Lake were a new discovery for me. Their adorable indie pop was perfectly suited to the early time slot on the outdoor stage. I also really enjoyed the Swiss electronic duo Larytta, as well as Shout Out Out Out Out, and Rainbow Arabia.

-Vivian Girls

A pair of Brooklyn darlings closed out the outdoor stage - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, followed by Vivian Girls. Both bands sounded really great live, particularly Pains..., who kicked off their set with the potent 1-2-punch of "This Love is Fucking Right" and "Young Adult Friction".

The Thermals really blew my mind. I'm not very familiar with their catalog of music, but their set was ferocious and captivating - short punk songs that nearly smashed into each other. I loved it!

Loney Dear and Fol Chen also played and sounded good, but their music isn't really my cup of tea.

-The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Beach House closed out the indoor stage, but it got so hot and crowded I only lasted about half a song. Their moody, dreamgaze sound would have put me into a heat coma and then bad things could have happened. Better safe than sorry!

CRYSTAL STILTS - Alight of Night

The only "Crystal" I didn't see this year at CMJ was Crystal Stilts, the brooding band from Brooklyn with a penchant for lo-fi nostalgia. The band just released their debut LP Alight of Night, a moody collection of songs that transport you to those smoke-filled, heroin-tinged parties you see photos of in books about The Velvet Underground. The music seems perfectly tailored around Brad Hargett's deep, vintage voice. Organist Kyle Forrester (Ladybug Transistor) and drummer Frankie Rose (Vivian Girls) perfectly add to a sound that has been dubbed by one writer as "avant-garage". I don't really know what that means, but Alight of Night will likely serve as the perfect winter soundtrack for many music lovers over the coming months, myself included.

New VIVIAN GIRLS Video - 'Tell the World'

For those of you who have wanted to get your hands on a copy of the Vivian Girls' sold out debut LP, you will finally get your chance. The album will be re-released September 30th via In the Red Records. In conjunction with the release, Vivian Girls have made an official video for the standout track "Tell the World". Very low budget and simple, the girls showcase their deadpan humor against a green screen, driving (and playing) their way into the woods.

Todd P's Midsummer Party at The Yard

About two weeks ago I had the privilige of attending Todd P's Midsummer Party at The Yard in Carroll Gardens (Brooklyn). I saw an astounding 15 under the radar bands and got to see John Norris (of MTV fame) up close and personal. The mini-fest was held on the canal bank at The Yard in Brooklyn, featuring amazing performances from Ponytail, Oneida, Titus Andronicus, Shy Child, Vivian Girls, Knyfe Hyts, Crystal Antlers, Abe Vigoda, Telepathe, High Places, and many more!

The scorching day by the canal was barely saved by a cooling breeze that made the heat almost bearable. It turned out to be a fantastic summer day, packed with loads of new talent. Todd P is a hero to Brooklyn right now, constantly providing us with new, cutting edge artists in venues like Market Hotel, Silent Barn, Death By Audio, and Bodega. Here he has captured the essence of what is bubbling under, providing a vastly entertaining day of indie music by the water in Brooklyn.

VIVIAN GIRLS

Vivian Girls have been on heavy rotation on my headphones ever since I caught their show with Love is All last month at Market Hotel. I instantly fell in love with their harmonies when I first heard "Where Do You Run To" and "Tell the World". They have that perfect blend of vintage noise and coy innocence.

The self-titled debut album is currently sold out, but will be reissued this fall. Though, if you use your internet savvy you can probably find it.

Check out this live footage of Vivian Girls at Market Hotel last month...

LOVE IS ALL, VIVIAN GIRLS, CAUSE CO-MOTION! Played Market Hotel

Love is All delivered another wildly entertaining set in NYC on Saturday night, this time at Market Hotel in Bushwick. The scene was sticky, hot and sweaty - a sauna full of jubilant fans who made their way out in the thunder and lightning to see the band from Sweden play in Brooklyn. The storm brought significant downpours, but that did nothing to cool off the steaming temperature at Market Hotel.

Cause Co-Motion! and the excellent Vivian Girls opened up the show. Both bands turned in short and tight sets, equally showing significant promise in what led to a rather amazing night of music. Vivian Girls are a three-piece from Brooklyn who have been described as sounding like "The Ronettes produced by Kevin Shields". I am all about these girls. Expect a lot more about them in the very near future.

Cause Co-Motion! reminded me of a cross between Elvis Costello and Gang of Four with their angular changes and tight syncopation.

-Cause Co-Motion!

But the real deal was Love is All. Their live shows have a particular energy that is both infectious and mesmerizing. Just check out the video clip below from Market Hotel, where the band rifles through the crowdpleaser "Ageing Had Never Been His Friend".

Love is All play their 3rd and final NYC show tonight at Bowery Ballroom with Versus and Crystal Stilts.
