Underground Alert: BRITTAIN ASHFORD

The lovely Bushwick autoharp genius Brittain Ashford played the Northeast Kingdom Den last night, and what transpired was truly awe-inspiring. Ashford sings with a startling confidence, accented beautifully by her phenomenal autoharp skills, as well as a unique variety of other instruments that I couldn't even begin to know what they're called. This is an artist who will go somewhere, trust.

Brittain self released her first album there, but for you, go i last year and is on the verge of hitting the studio for album #2. She is also launching a US tour in Brooklyn on June 6th. Full itinerary below.

THE BIG PINK

The Big Pink are a brooding duo from London who are creating quite a buzz long before an actual album has even been finished. Recently signed to 4AD, the band has announced plans of a new single.
"The Big Pink have confirmed details of their next single, the follow-up to ‘Velvet’. Entitled ‘Stop The World’, it comes backed with exclusive track ‘Crushed Water’ and is set to be released on 29th June on 7” vinyl / digital download through 4AD. The band are currently ensconced in New York’s legendary Electric Ladyland Studios recording their debut album..."

Check out the videos for "Velvet" and "Too Young To Love"...

MODERAT

Modeselektor + Apparat = Moderat.

My friend Pilar urged me to listen to the new Moderat album and now it's really starting to sink in. Just check out this preview clip of "Rusty Nails". The video is from the album's accompanying dvd.

"The debut single is representative of the musical concept of the trio: a maximal, polished sound aesthetic with atmospheric density with driving but reserved rhythms already developed. On the album version, the proverbial undertow emerges after a few bars with somber, radiant beauty without overwhelming the listener with excessive melancholy. Breathe deep, sit back, and let it work!"

YEAH YEAH YEAHS - Heads Will Roll

The new YYY's video for "Heads Will Roll" is pretty awesome. Love Karen O's outfit and the raining paper blood!

HOLY FUCK - Lovely Allen (No Age remix)

This remix is pretty old by now, but Holy Fuck just got around to making a video for the tripped out track. Using footage from a live show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn, this hallucinatory clip was shot by Yoonha Park. While more subdued than the original, I really like the stark contrast of the No Age version.

GRIZZLY BEAR - Veckatimest

Surely one of the more anticipated releases of the first half of the year, Grizzly Bear's follow-up to the stunning 2006 release Yellow House will almost certainly be met with heavy praise. A listening party for the new album goes down Monday at Manhattan's Other Music. Veckatimest is released Tuesday via Warp.

And here's the new video for the single "Two Weeks", directed by Patrick Daughters.

HEALTH - Get Color

Disco punk band HEALTH are prepping the release of their second album Get Color, due September 8th on Lovepump United. According to Pitchfork, "Die Slow sounds like a party where Lightning Bolt's playing at one end of the room and Giorgio Moroder is studiously banging out psych-disco masterpieces at the other..." Can't wait! Oh, and the cover artwork is pretty killer too.

Get Color:

02 Die Slow
03 Nice Girls
04 Death+
05 Before Tiger

SUCKERS - Debut EP, New Video

Suckers' debut EP, produced by Yeasayer's Anand Wilder with Chris Moore, is out now on IAMSOUND. These guys definitely fall in the vein of Yeasayer, Amazing Baby, Chairlift, etc. There's also a major Talking Heads vibe going on here. New video and mp3 below.

CRYSTAL STILTS - Love Is A Wave

My favorite Crystal Stilts song to date now has a video. "Love is a Wave" was released as a single on Slumberland in March. The new video is a collage of fairly random vintage footage, but it suits the upbeat track really well.

Radiohead Recording New Album

P4K reports that Radiohead has been in the studio with Nigel Godrich, recording material for a new album. Just thought I'd share that. Cause if it's like last time we heard this news, said album could drop in a week.

LITTLE JOY - Next Time Around

This new Little Joy video makes me really nostalgic, but I'm not sure for what. Maybe it's the carefree vibe of friends driving around in a VW bug or possibly the beautiful footage of a South American summer vacation. Whatever it is, the video perfectly suits the lovely track from Little Joy's debut album, released last year on Rough Trade.

SHARON VAN ETTEN - For You

The lovely and talented Sharon Van Etten has one of the most gorgeous voices I've heard in a long time. Full of fragility and beautiful sorrow, Sharon has that rare ability to touch your most delicate of nerves. A TSR insider attended a listening party for her new record a couple of weeks ago and said everyone in the room became misty-eyed. She has already won over a quite devoted following thanks to her captivating live shows and her sold out Home Recordings disc.

Recently Sharon opened for Beirut in the US and London and is currently on a European tour with Great Lake Swimmers. The new album Because I Was In Love is out on May 26th via Language of Stone. Check out the video for the track "For You".

VIVIAN GIRLS - Moped Girls/Death

Vivian Girls are set to release the new Moped Girls/Death 7" on July 5th.
"'moped girls' is one minute and 54 seconds of reverb drenched indie pop perfection that sounds like it should have been released in 1986 on the subway organization or 53rd and 3rd records. on the flip 'death' starts like a long lost 60's 'girls in the garage' nugget before turning into a much darker beast with reverb vocals and guitars taking the lead."
Get your copy here.

New LOVE IS ALL Video - Last Choice

My favorite Swedish band are back with this new stop animation video for "Last Choice", taken from their sophomore LP A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night. The band return to the states for a brief tour, kicking off June 2nd in Hoboken. Full tour dates and more from Love is All here.

DAEDELUS - LA Nocturn

This hypnotic new track from Los Angeles psychedelic electro guru Daedelus is perfectly dreamy, inspiring me to delve into his back catalog of a zillion releases. "LA Nocturn" either samples Smashing Pumpkins or has a one word chorus that sounds exactly like Billy Corgan. Either way, that's not what's important here. Daedelus is a sort of mad genius and his world is one worth exploring.

Also, check out this absolutely insane live performance video from a show in San Antonio, Texas.

JASON LYTLE - I Am Lost (and the Moment Cannot Last)

Former Grandaddy front man Jason Lytle drops his solo debut Yours Truly, the Commuter on May 19th.
"Electronic flourishes collide with acoustic guitars and soulful piano parts, recreating Lytle’s signature lo-fi-electro atmospheres." - Anti-
Here's the very odd new video for "I Am Lost (and the Moment Cannot Last)".

THE HORRORS - Primary Colours

Pull up a chair, because you should really spend the next 12 minutes or so, watching these two new videos by The Horrors. You could say they look and/or sound like a multitude of artists, because they definitely have their influences up front and center - Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, Brian Eno, to name a few. But the new sophomore LP Primary Colours is a jaw-dropping opus of an album, that will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the year's best. Shoegazer anthem rock with perfect splashes of Eno-esque synth drama. Primary Colours is bold and theatrical, and it immediately demands your attention.

Now witness the (real) arrival of The Horrors with this pair of stunning videos directed by Douglas Hart. The first one is 8 1/2 minutes long so get comfortable.

LITTLE BOOTS - "New in Town"

Victoria Hekseth, aka Little Boots, is taking Europe by storm with her infectious breed of electro dance-pop. Now she has her sights set on America. She is set to release the US-exclusive ep Illuminations on June 9th. The disc will include the singles "New in Town" and "Stuck on Repeat", serving as a precursor to her full-length debut Hands, due later this year. Get a free mini-mix of the album here.
