CYNDI LAUPER - Bring Ya To The Brink

Cyndi Lauper's new album Bring Ya to the Brink is set for a May 27th release in the US. The new studio album has been described as a rhythmic, dance album and features collaborations with Kleerup, Basement Jaxx, Dragonette and many more. I have a feeling this one is gonna be good.

Catch Cyndi on the True Colors Tour this summer, where she will be joined by The B-52's, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and more.

THE B-52'S - New Video for "Funplex"

Funplex

There are many funny things about this video. But the funniest thing of all is the juxtaposition in energy between Kate and Cindy. While Kate is as bouncy and cheerful as ever, Cindy looks nearly comatose.

For anyone who has ever liked The B-52's, you must check out their new album. I would describe it in more detail, but Eric Harvey's review over at Pitchfork sums it up perfectly. The highlight track for me is 'Eyes Wide Open'.

A New Song Emerges From THE B-52'S

A new song has emerged from The B-52's hotly anticipated new album Funplex. The new song, "Hot Corner" sounds as if it was recorded during the Cosmic Thing sessions. It's good to see them picking up right where they left off years ago.

In related news, some are ackowledging the Athens, GA resurgence.

Funplex is released March 25 via Astralwerks.

THE B-52'S - "Funplex"

The B-52's will finally release their follow-up to 1992's "Good Stuff" on March 25 via Astralwerks. "Funplex" was recorded just a few blocks from the location of their first performance on Valentine's Day 1977 and features new tracks like 'Pump', 'Love in the Year 3000', and 'Keep This Party Going'. The title track will be released as the first single on January 29. The band premiered a handful of songs from the new album at a memorable Halloween show in NYC last year. The show was off the hook.

THE B-52'S Played Roseland Ballroom

The B-52's looked and sounded fantastic at the Roseland Ballroom last night. The crowd was extremely energetic and most were dressed up for Halloween. What a fun night!

The band premiered about six new songs from their forthcoming album "Funplex", including the title song, 'Pump', 'Juliet of the Spirits', 'Keep This Party Going', and 'Love in the Year 3000'.

Highlights from the set were the the opening number 'Party Out of Bounds', which was followed by a killer version of 'Mesopotamia', as well as 'Strobe Light', 'Roam', 'Give Me Back My Man' and 'Planet Claire'. And of course the place turned into an all out dance masquerade for their biggest hits 'Private Idaho', 'Love Shack', and 'Rock Lobster'.

Unfortunately we missed The Rapture, who opened the show. I heard they were great, but I've also seen them many times before.

THE B-52'S - "Funplex"

The B-52's have signed to Astralwerks and will release their first album in 16 years on February 26th, 2008. The new disk "Funplex" was recorded in Athens, Georgia and produced by Steve Osborne (Doves, New Order, Happy Mondays).

Glenn Mendlinger, Astralwerks label manager says, "We are thrilled to be bringing The B-52's music to a new generation of intergalactic fans. Cindy, Fred, Kate, and Keith have made an album that is incredibly fresh, dynamic and perhaps most importantly, quintessentially The B-52's ... instantly recognizable, instantly fun."

Tomorrow night The B-52's share the stage with The Rapture for a special Halloween show at The Roseland Ballroom. Last I heard there are still tickets available.

Funplex tracklist:

1. Pump
2. Hot Corner
3. Ultraviolet
4. Juliet Of The Spirits
5. Funplex
6. Eyes Wide Open
7. Love In The Year 3000

TUESDAY THROWBACK - THE B-52'S

So, I'm introducing a new weekly series...Tuesday Throwback...and no one better to kick it off with than THE B-52'S. With a new album on the way and the upcoming Halloween show in NYC with THE RAPTURE, let's dig in to the past and explore the origins of the greatest party band ever (sorry CSS). Here are some very rare, vintage clips showcasing The B-52's in all their eclectic glory. Enjoy.

'Hero Worship' has always been one of my favorite tracks. From the 1979 debut album, it features Cindy Wilson in her finest howling wail. This ultra-rare video shows her in her rawest state - a sexy growl and deadpan demeanor - this is classic. Not to mention Kate Pierson on guitar!!!

Hero Worship

'Rock Lobster' is certainly one of their most well-known songs, but here you get to see The B's in a very early carnation. Doesn't Fred Schneider look frighteningly thin?

Rock Lobster

Another all-time favorite of mine, 'Devil In My Car' is an awesome, gritty garage rock track. Sometimes I wish they never went electro, but due to the untimely death of guitarist Ricky Wilson, a transformation inevitably occurred.

Devil in My Car

Yet again, a fave of mine. 'Dirty Back Road', featuring splendid split vocals by Kate and Cindy.

Dirty Back Road

I know, they are definitely lip-syncing in this video, but it's cool to see this era of The B's, coming into popularity with one of the most recognizable new wave songs of the early 80's, 'Private Idaho'.

Private Idaho

Though shot for a TV spot and clearly lip-syncing (Hey! It was the 80's), 'Give Me Back My Man' is another amazing solo-vocal track by Cindy Wilson.

Give Me Back My Man

And finally, the least known hit single from the 1989 breakthrough album "Cosmic Thing". The video for 'Deadbeat Club' finds The B-52's in vintage "throwback" style, hanging out with Michael Stipe, among others.

JUNIOR SENIOR Invades New York, CD Release Tuesday

JUNIOR SENIOR kick off their New York City invasion tonight with a FREE instore show at 9:00pm at Sound Fix Records in Williamsburg. The store is located at 110 Bedford Ave., just off the L train Bedford stop. The duo will also be signing copies of their new album "Hey Hey My My Yo Yo", which finally sees its US release on Tuesday.

Then comes Monday night, when Junior Senior will be joined by San Francisco party band GRAVY TRAIN and Le Tigre's JD SAMSON for a headlining show at NYC's brand new Highline Ballroom. This will be the funnest option you have on a Monday night (or any other night this week, if you ask me).

"Hey Hey My My Yo Yo" is a definitive party album, packed with guest artists and hip-shakin' dance-funk. The US release also comes accompanied by a special 7-song ep "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye".

The stand-out track for me is 'Take My Time', which features the lovely harmonies of Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson of THE B-52'S. The track recalls the blissful, easy going vibe of The B-52's breakout 1989 album "Cosmic Thing". Also featured on the album are SPOONER OLDHAM, sixties girl group THE VELVELETTES (known for 'Needle In A Haystack' and 'He Was Really Saying Something') and the not exactly broken up LE TIGRE, who provide the vocals on another key track, 'We Are the Handclaps'. Oldham, whose fame stems from his piano/keyboard contributions to classics such as Percy Sledge's 'When A Man Loves A Woman' and Aretha Franklin's 'I Never Loved A Man', provides the keys on the Kathleen Hanna track 'Dance Chance Romance'.

In short, this is a superstar album that should expose Junior Senior to the masses. In fact, the lead off single 'Can I Get Get Get', featuring JD Samson, has already made it's way around the globe, and is now a key theme song on the LOGO Network.
