BETH DITTO Nude on the Cover of NME

And doesn't she look amazing?

THE GOSSIP are one of the greatest bands of our time, not only because of their music, but also for their tireless efforts to break down social barriers. From Ditto's fearlessness and uninhibited sex appeal to the band's openly gay status in the rock world to joining The True Colors Tour to support the Human Rights Campaign

Here is an excerpt from NME's cover story interview with Beth:

"Yet one of the things Beth Ditto does gives a f*ck about, is body image. So much so, that Beth recently refused for The Gossip to play instores at Topshop, citing her dissatisfaction that there isn’t a clothes range available in her size. She even went as far as to offer to design clothes for them. She’s never claimed to promote her body size (“I’m just saying people should be empowered about who they are,” she tells us), yet it’s worth asking, does she feel a responsibility to pick a side in the size zero debate?

“Not at all,” says Beth, immediately. “Things are more complicated than that – there’s too many factors to pick a side. The older I get and the more models and designers I meet... sometimes models are naturally just thin. Like, that’s their size.”

When you talk about meeting models, do you mean Kate Moss?

“Kate is amazing,” purrs Beth. “I spent one night talking to her and she just said the most amazing things about bodies. At first I didn’t think I was going to like her, but she just turned up to one of our shows and said, ‘Do you know what I hate, Beth? When people tell my big girlfriends, ‘You have a beautiful face...’’ I mean, that’s a really radical concept.”

Do you not think Kate Moss actually has a responsibility to answer to the size debate, though?

“You can’t hate a person for dieting, and you can’t blame a person for feeling shit about themselves. You have to blame the machine that feeds it, the thing that makes people feel like that. There are lots of things that are part of that machine, and it’s too easy to lay the blame at the feet of women – men don’t know what it feels like to be a woman and be expected to look a particular way all the time. The Beckhams are part of the machine; Paris Hilton is part of the machine. There’s that thing Paris Hilton said about Lindsay Lohan – ‘You’re poor, ugly and fat’. It’s always women who are victims of that machine and the messages the machine gives out.”

But surely Kate Moss is that machine?

“I had those conversations with Kate,” says Beth, “and Kate agreed with me. She’s a smart person.”

Do you think she’s happy doing what she’s doing?

“I don’t know.”

But if she agreed with you...

“I have this thing where I don’t ever want to bad-mouth a woman. Except for Paris Hilton.” She laughs again. “Please tell me you saw that thing where she was crying in the newspapers, about her going to prison. It was so funny. I was laughing until I was crying.”

Tell me more about not wanting to bad-mouth women...

Beth speaks quietly again. “I pick and choose my battles. I think Condoleezza Rice is more of a goddamn shame than Kate Moss, and I think those are the things people should concentrate on. What I’m saying is that, if there’s anyone to blame for size zero, it’s not women. Blame the media. Blame gay men who work in the fashion industry who want these women as dolls.”

YO MAJESTY Opening for CSS

I'm so excited, because YO MAJESTY are opening for CSS at the Fillmore East Friday. Not only will The Sky Report be on hand for the show, but we will also be posting an exclusive interview with LUIZA SA of CSS. She is dropping by our headquarters (OK, our apartment) in Bushwick tonight. Expect a full-scale interview, where we ask her about MADONNA's 'Girlie Show', her first concert when she was 10, and the infamous PARIS HILTON appearance during their recent set at Coachella. The interview and subsequent review of the YO MAJESTY and CSS show will be posted over the weekend.

MUSCLES

If you are reading about MUSCLES for the first time here, you really need to read more music blogs. This guy has been all over the place for the last six months, largely because of his breakthrough track 'Ice Cream', which Gorilla Vs. Bear declared the "2007 summer jam of the year".

The latest track to make the blog rounds is 'One Inch Badge Pin' and it is just as good, if not better. Catch up now on what was kinda cool a few months ago, but will be huge in the future.

DARKEL

It's taken me awhile to get acquainted with the solo debut of DARKEL, one half of the French electro duo AIR. The self-titled album was released way back in September 2006 and I have only just given it a spin for the first time. Wow. I love it so much better than the latest Air album. Check out the album's lead-off track 'Be My Friend'.

FRASE+BRI

Once again, Big Stereo has brought me up to speed on a hot new electro duo that I should be stripping down to my underwear to. FRASE+BRI come to us from New Zealand and make sweet romantic electro. The track '8hr Crush' is cocaine to anyone with a bad habit for underground 80's synth-pop, while 'Shoegazer Sweat' is like a delirious ride through an electrohead's mind at the break of dawn at a rave. Good, good stuff!

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS - "We Are the Night"

Tom and Ed are back! THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS' sixth proper album "We Are the Night" will be released stateside July 3. The first single 'Do It Again' kinda sounds like JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE'S 'Sexy/Back' at times, but I'm liking it soooo much better than anything off of "Push the Button". The video involves tooth extractions and looks like a scene out of Babel. Somehow, all of this works for me.

DEBORAH HARRY - "Necessary Evil"

At the tender age of 61, BLONDIE legend DEBORAH HARRY is as hard at work as ever. After a solo summer jaunt in the U.S. with the True Colors Tour and a brief European tour with Blondie, Harry will release her fifth solo album, "Necessary Evil" on August 7. The release will mark her first solo record since 1993's "Debravation", a recording many would rather forget (and probably have).

The catchy first single from the new album is titled 'Two Times Blue' and is available to stream now. If anyone stumbles across an mp3, please share the wealth!

Urge Interviews DNTEL, Gives Insight On the Future of POSTAL SERVICE

After a long hiatus, DNTEL (aka Jimmy Tamborello, also of POSTAL SERVICE and JAMES FIGURINE) recently released his third full length, "Dumb Luck" on Sub Pop. Listen to a stream of "Dumb Luck" in its entirety.

URGE recently caught up with Tamborello to discuss, among other things, the new album, the many different monikers, and the fate of his most successful project, THE POSTAL SERVICE.

"URGE: You play in a couple of bands; Postal Service and Figurine; and create solo work as Dntel, James Figurine and Headset. How do you define each project for yourself, and what makes each one different?

Jimmy Tamborello: Well, like you said, Figurine and Postal Service are bands. They're defined partly by the fact that there are other people involved. Figurine started off as a '80s synth take-off, but by the last album [2001's The Heartfelt] I think it changed into modern techno-pop. Postal Service sort of comes from the same place, except that it incorporates more indie rock, guitars and stuff. But maybe that's by default, considering who is in the group. The James Figurine stuff came out of the fact that all of us in Figurine had done music under our fake names, and it became a techno thing because I wanted to try to do that kind of music. Dntel's the one I've been doing the longest, since the mid-'90s. It's usually the most experimental of the projects, but it's still techno-pop. I'm always trying to come up with new sounds [as Dntel] and the ultimate goal is of coming up with a new kind of music that couldn't happen elsewhere. Whereas with Figurine or Postal Service, it's more about the songs.

URGE: You took a pretty long time to create Dumb Luck, even though you already had some songs finished in 2005. What was going on?

Tamborello: Part of it was just not having much of a plan, just waiting until you have enough songs that fit together, and that's when you stop. Even the songs that I finished early on — "Breakfast in Bed" with Conor, the Jenny Lewis song — I would go back to over the years, because I was bored with them. There are layers in these songs that tie them all together. The bottom layers are five years old [and] I can hear what I was listening to at the time. It's like peeling away at the tree bark.

URGE: Is that why Dumb Luck ended up veering so much towards indie guitar music?

Tamborello: Part of it was getting techno out of my system with the James Figurine album. There were a couple of dancey moments [on Dumb Luck] but I ended up taking them off. The fact that I started [the album] with that song, "Dumb Luck," had something to do with it, too. I usually start with one song as a blueprint and work out from that, always trying to have that sound in mind. So I started with one that was mostly acoustic guitar. There was also the music I was listening to at the time, a lot of Fennesz and those kinds of electronic sounds. Early on, I discovered Animal Collective's Danse Manatee, which got me to turning on the microphone and recording spontaneously, live percussion and stuff that I could later edit to get some feeling into it. And a lot of the Cluster/Eno for synth ideas and textures.

URGE: You also started singing, which you have not previously done for Dntel.

Tamborello: Not a lot. When I started the album, I wanted it to be just me, but I chickened out of it. [Laughs.] I still feel pretty limited, lyrically. I get, like one song out a year. The James Figurine songs were a lot easier to write, because I can take it less seriously. I feel like I'm better at being goofy than serious. It's funny, 'cause I've read reviews for Dumb Luck, and I feel like people are taking it as a lot darker and drearier than I imagined. I thought it was quirky and pretty happy in a weird sort of way.
Though I guess it's also more claustrophobic, and the tempos are mostly slower.

URGE: Why is that? You mentioned before that you got the beats out of your system with the James Figurine album. It seems like that album affected the Dntel album quite a lot.

Tamborello: I decided to start to work as James Figurine more out of frustration, almost to get away from Dntel, and it felt good to have a detour. It helped that I did [Mistake] with John Tejada, who helped me mix it [and] work faster. A lot of it was just him showing me new equipment, mixing it in, adding parts to songs. I liked using some of it so much, [that equipment] went into making the Dntel album, and that would have turned out very different [without it].

URGE: How so?

Tamborello: It got me more into the purely electronic sounds again. Dntel was veering so much more towards the organic side, James Figurine took me back towards adding more synths; it contributed to the awkward feel of Dumb Luck.

URGE: I've got to ask; where in the gestation period is the next Postal Service album?

Tamborello: [Ben Gibbard and I] are working on songs but it doesn't feel any more like a band. It still feels like a side project. We don't have a schedule, and I could just as easily see it never materializing again as having another album. We both want to make sure that we put it out because we have more ideas; not to sell more records. We're still working on songs the same way: by mail. We started around the beginning of this year, and it's hard to say what the sound is. I sent him a few beats, he added some stuff to it, that's it. I do like the three unfinished songs we have so far, but it's hard to say what's going to happen."

That Brit DJ duo La Grève Générale are at it again! Their latest mix RAVE OR DIE was performed live recently at the Rocklands Party in London. And now we have it all right here for you to download so you can pretend you're the greatest DJ on Earth at your next house party. DAN DEACON - 'The Crystal Cat'

Not one for feeling left out, I couldn't resist joining the hoopla surrounding DAN DEACON right now. In a matter of two weeks, this guy has become a bonified blog star.

Deacon is from Baltimore, where he is part of the artist collective WHAM CITY. His latest album "Spiderman of the Rings" was released last week and is taking the world by storm. Well, at least the world that is Pitchfork Media. It is pretty f-ing brilliant, I must say.

JAMIE RADFORD - "The Freedom To Be Reckless"

The self-proclaimed experimental electronic rapper JAMIE RADFORD hails from Athens, Georgia, the music-laden land that produced bands like R.E.M., THE B-52'S and OF MONTREAL. But you'd never assume Georgia as the point of reference here. Instead, we have a chill rapper that sounds like he came out of the cracks in a sort of British Detroit in the future. Comparisons have been made, likening Radford's unique sound to that of THE ALBUM LEAF, PREFUSE 73 and even the groundbreaking sci-fi hip-hop 'Psyence Fiction' record from UNKLE. You'll have to draw your own conclusion by streaming Radford's second album "The Freedom To Be Reckless".

THE GO! TEAM - 'Grip Like A Vice'

Ladies and Gentlemen, THE GO! TEAM are back! Now it's really starting to feel like summer. The Brighton collective are set to release their brand new single in July, with an as yet untitled album to follow in September. The new single 'Grip Like A Vice' sounds kind of like SALT 'N' PEPA if they had performed at Woodstock 1969. Sound crazy? Check it for yourself.

Summer Has (Almost) Arrived...It's the Beat!

Summer is upon us and for those of you who live in NYC, you know what that means. People start losing their shit. Whether it be on a hot and packed subway car or in the congested lines at Duane Reade, tempers get really short when it's sweltering outside. It's a good thing I've got these tracks to blast on my iPod while shutting out the hysteria of overheated New Yorkers.

BEIRUT and FINAL FANTASY @ Bowery Ballroom

A few hours after the YYY's debacle, I headed over to the Bowery Ballroom for night two of the BEIRUT/FINAL FANTASY extravaganza.

WOW! I can honestly say that this was one of the very best shows I've been to in quite some time. I was actually kinda thinking this would be a show leaning more towards the boring side. I couldn't have been more wrong.

The lovely Owen Pallett got things started under his moniker of FINAL FANTASY. Playing solo with his violin and occasionally on keyboard (though he was accompanied by a very entertaining live projectionist), Owen quickly had the crowd transfixed by his bizarre, yet completely engaging performance. Members of BEIRUT came out and joined Owen for the encore, teasing the audience with a taste of what was to follow.

Later, Zach Condon and his brass and strings entourage took to the stage for the opening number 'Postcards From Italy'. The BEIRUT show may have gotten off to a rather quiet start, but by mid-set they had the crowd worked into a sort of frenzy. Condon seemed visibly drunk, but his performance got better and better as he went. For the triumphant encore, the entire band (including members of ARCADE FIRE, who hot-tailed it downtown following their own headlining show) descended into the crowd, playing from the floor.

It has been a long time since a performance had me laughing out loud because I was having such a great time. I even threw my hands up in the air at one point, feeling the celebration that is BEIRUT flying out of me. I'm a geek for great music I guess.

Here's some photographic evidence of the great time that was had by all.

P.S. Many thanks to the folks at Urge for presenting an amazing night of music. Word is they are releasing an exclusive live EP of Beirut's Bowery Ballroom shows.

The YEAH YEAH YEAHS Free Show

Well, I spent 45 minutes standing against a brick wall down by the water in Williamsburg, listening to the YEAH YEAH YEAHS rehearse (through the wall), and all I got was a timid "Sold out! No more wristbands!" I was so disappointed. But really, I fucked up. I lined up on S. 2nd St. rather than the designated S. 1st St. option, wasting a good 15 minutes of line-up time. I really think it came down to that moment of stale-brain that seems to get me oh so many times.

Anyway, I got turned away (along with 200 or so other black-laden wannabe YYY riverside art gallery rockers) and ended up slamming Stellas at Broadway Diner with cohorts Emily and Jacob. Whatever. At least I got to hear them rehearse. But say that wasn't them rehearsing. I can't really be sure. There was no KAREN O on vocal. And I didn't really recognize the jams to be that of said YYY's. But why would anyone else be playing an obscure art gallery in Williamsburg at four-thirty in the afternoon?

It seems there is quite a controversy about the whole thing. But honestly, everyone needs to just chill!

New UNKLE Album on the Way

Billboard reports that UNKLE (James Lavelle minus DJ Shadow) will release its 3rd album "War Stories" on July 24. The roster of guests on the set include, among others, THE CULT's Ian Astbury, AUTOLUX and (yes, yes, yes!) THE DUKE SPIRIT!!! I love The Duke Spirit. This alone gets me pumped for this album's release!

The first single will be "Burn My Shadow", which features Ian Astbury on vocals.

UNKLE's 1998 debut 'Psyence Fiction' is one of the greatest fusions of rock and trip-hop ever made.

Here is the tracklist for "War Stories":

Intro
Chemistry
Hold My Hand
Restless (feat. Josh Homme)
Keys to the Kingdom (feat. Gavin Clark)
Price You Pay
Burn My Shadow (feat. Ian Astbury)
May Day (feat. the Duke Spirit)
Persons & Machinery (feat. Autolux)
Twilight (feat. 3D)
Morning Rage
Lawless
Broken (feat. Gavin Clark)
When Things Explode (feat. Ian Astbury)

What a week!

Clearly it's a huge week for music in NYC, with both THE ARCADE FIRE and BJORK in town for a cavalcade of sold-out shows. Also playing (mostly sold-out shows) this week are LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, YACHT, AIR, TV ON THE RADIO, AMY WINEHOUSE, SPANK ROCK, BLONDE REDHEAD, PATRICK WOLF, ALBERT HAMMOND JR. and THE POLYPHONIC SPREE! In addition, both THE BRAVERY and YEAH YEAH YEAHS are playing multiple free shows today.

The week got off to a rousing start last night at the BEIRUT/FINAL FANTASY show at The Bowery Ballroom when members of The Arcade Fire joined in on Beirut's encore. SUFJAN STEVENS and members of GRIZZLY BEAR and THE NATIONAL were in attendance as well. Too bad I'm going tonight - it will be hard to match last night's extravaganza. But who knows? Maybe BJORK and AMY WINEHOUSE will pop in for cameos. Or maybe not.

IN THE WORKS: A Round-Up of Bands Going Into the Studio - Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jesus and Mary Chain

According to a recent article in NME, JESUS & MARY CHAIN are finally making plans to head into the studio to record the long anticipated follow up their 1998 release "Munki". This is the best news I've heard...well, at least this week.

NME also reports that Emily Haines and her band METRIC have set up camp in Toronto, where they are already in the process of recording their next album. They apparently already have 15 songs written, which I find remarkable. Emily Haines has got to be one of the most prolific figures in music right now. Does she ever sleep?

You may already know by now that the YEAH YEAH YEAHS are doing two free shows Monday night at Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg for a very special audience of 250. The whole idea sounds like wonderful chaos to me. But even more exciting, the YYY's have announced the release of a brand new EP! No further details can be found, but chances are it will be released very soon.

EDITORS - "An End Has A Start"

EDITORS are set to release their second full length "An End Has A Start" in Europe on June 25. No US date has been announced as of yet, but it will most likely follow shortly after. The first single 'Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors' finds the EDITORS in their finest state of gloom, continuing with their exploration of a genre paved many years prior by JOY DIVISION and not so many years prior by INTERPOL. Whatever...I still like it.

Stream the new single on Myspace.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - "All My Friends"

I'm having a rough day...computer problems of the most annoying kind. In the meantime, here's the new LCD SOUNDSYSTEM video. It made me feel better anyway.
