THE PRESETS Wowed the Bowery Ballroom, WALTER MEEGO Showed Subtle Promise

The Presets are an act I've seen twice before, and after last night's gig at the Bowery Ballroom I can say that they just keep getting better and better every time. The crowd, which included Zero 7 ulumni Sia and Letigre's JD Samson, was absolutely into it - dancing, jumping around, and singing along. Among the highlights of the high octane set were the mesmerizing "Steamworks", the vicious anthem "Are You the One", and the encore closer "I Go Hard, I Go Home". What pleased me most though is that the newer singles "My People" and "This Boy's in Love" worked really well live. I haven't been able to get very into the new album as of yet, but after last night I'm diving in head first.

The Presets setlist:
Talk Like That/Down Down Down/Girl/?New Track?/A New Sky/Yippyo Ay/Are You The One/Together/Aeons/Girl & the Sea/Steamworks/This Boy's In Love/Kicking & Screaming/My People
(Encore) Anywhere/I Go Hard I Go Home.

Walter Meego played a lukewarm set before The Presets took the stage. Whereas they sounded flawless, they had no energy whatsoever, save for the awesome guy on the computer boards. He looked like he was sweating his ass off at a rave. The other two guys should take note. If these guys can muster up a better stage show they could evolve into something really great.

NEW VIDEO FRIDAY (Dark Electro Edition)
At long last, new Portishead...
Portishead - Machine Gun
Telepathique are from Sao Paulo, Brazil. They sound like what would happen if Bonde do Role (pre Marina's departure) were to make a late night club record.
Telepathique - Eu Gosto
The new Presets video is what I would definitely define as homoerotic. Not the most complex video in the world, but I definitely like the song a lot better than their previous single "My People".
The Presets - This Boy's in Love
Kleerup produced Robyn's "With Every Heartbeat". Fans of that track will definitely hear a similarity in production here. Titiyo is Neneh Cherry's little sister. The intricate yarn that is Swedish pop music continues to unfurl.
Kleerup ft. Titiyo - Longing for Lullabies
I love Crystal Castles music, but this video is flat out weird and momentarily disturbing. WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK.

THE PRESETS - 'My People' Music Video
The music video has arrived for the new single from The Presets, 'My People'. I'm not sure why, but the video really lifts the song for me. It's very simple, yet quite effective. The new album is expected early 2008.

Triple Threat at FIXED Party

Norwegian band DATAROCK stole the show at Studio B last night, easily outperforming a rather tense version of THE PRESETS. The beat-heavy night got started with Swedish synth trio LO-FI-FNK, which I just discovered is pronounced funk not fink as some might have thought. LO-FI-FNK was fun, especially when a drunk (and seemingly obsessed fan) jumped onto the stage and danced behind the band during the song "Heartache", oblivious to the ironic lyrics being sung..."Would you just get out of my face, you're crashing the party". It was a gas.
DATAROCK took the stage shortly after, fully clad in their infamous hooded red track suits. I had no idea folks were so familiar with these guys. The crowd was so into it, dancing wildly and singing along to most of the songs. In fact, at one point three guys rushed the stage, creating quite an onstage scuffle. Synthesizers flew. Cuss words flew. Security pounced. It got crazy for a minute. But DATAROCK didn't hold a grudge and soon the party resumed, bigger than ever. When the guys took to their most popular song, "Fa-Fa-Fa", the crowd erupted into a celebratory dance party. Fun was had by all.
THE PRESETS seemed unusually tense, particularly before their set, hovering over the sound mixer for a good 20 minutes. Once onstage, they lacked the energy of previous shows. In fact, I don't think I saw the drummer smile even once throughout the entire set. But still, THE PRESETS's huge electro sound won the crowd over, continuing the party into the wee hours of the night. The unsung heroes of the night were DJ's JDH and DAVE P, lacing each set together with solid electro jams. I absolutely love that they started the night off with PRIMAL SCREAM's early classic "Come Together". Perfect.

Be The Riottt! - THE PRESETS
THE PRESETS had a lengthy sound issue, delaying their set by a good 35 minutes or so. Julian Hamilton, the singer/keyboardist half of the Aussie electro duo, was visibly frustrated and it almost started to feel like the show wasn't going to get off the ground. Luckily, the over-stressed soundman in the Polk Room eventually figured out how to get Julian's mic working, because what ensued was the talk of the festival.
A nonstop new wave dance factory, THE PRESETS delivered, slamming through the sinister pop of "Are You the One?", the funked-out electric "Kitty in the Middle", and the electro-nostlagia of "Girl and the Sea". The duo literally had the room jumping with the infectious neo-rave anthem "I Go Hard, I Go Home". For a second I felt like I had been teleported back in time to the hottest underground party in San Francisco circa 1989.
For a duo comprised of a drummer and a keyboardist, I was amazed at the energy and sound these guys created. The crowd was nearly epileptic in it's show of affection, as sweating 20-somethings poured out of the room at set's end, spilling euphorically back into the Civic Center's brightly lit corridors of beer vendors to chat about what just occurred.

BE THE RIOTTT!!!
Only two days left until the Riottt Festival descends on San Francisco.
I am especially excited since I live only two short blocks from the infamous Bill Graham Civic Center, where hot hot hot acts like THE RAPTURE, GIRL TALK, THE PRESETS, ASOBI SEKSU, METRIC, DEERHOOF, XIU XIU and DIPLO will be lifting the roof off of said historical building.
I can't wait.
