DEERHUNTER's Microcastle/Weird Era Continued Finally Hits Shelves

One of the finer releases of 2008 has finally been released in physical form, after its earlier leak and subsequent digital release on iTunes last August. Microcastle is the much anticipated follow-up to Deerhunter's 2007 breakthrough album Cryptograms. The new release comes packaged with a special bonus CD containing another entire album entitled Weird Era Continued. I know I've said this before, but frontman Bradford Cox is the single most prolific man in music today. After all, earlier this year he also released an exceptional album under his side project moniker Atlas Sound. That's three albums in 2008 alone, not to mention the plethora of non-album tracks that Cox regularly posts on his blog. It's hard to keep up.

Microcastle/Weird Era Continued is available now via Kranky Records.

DEERHUNTER - Microcastle

Believe it or not, Deerhunter, who crowned The Sky Report's Best of 2007 List, are back with another new album. Just over a year after their debut Cryptograms took the indie world by storm, Deerhunter are prepping the release of Microcastle, the ambitious, yet more accessible follow-up LP, due for release by late summer 08.

Early word is the album is fantastic. Check out the track "Never Stops" below.

LE CASTLE VANIA

I've been a fan of Le Castle Vania since his incredible remix of Snowden's "Black Eyes" back in 2006. The talented remixer from Atlanta has been busy in the last year with loads of remixes and his collaboration with Blake Miller of Moving Units on a new project, Lies in Disguise. In fact, Lies in Disguise are playing tonight (and every night this week) at the Winter Music Conference in Miami.

Le Castle Vania has an ep in the works, but in the meantime check out his brand new remix of "Hey You" by Kill the Noise, an electro killer for the dancefloor.

BLACK LIPS Rocked The Bowery Ballroom

Though tame compared to past shows, Atlanta's BLACK LIPS played a rowdy, tight, and poppin' set last night at the Bowery Ballroom and the crowd was very, very into it. They ran through all their best songs, including 'Katrina', 'Cold Hands', 'Not A Problem', and 'Stranger', the latter of which you can watch below. My only complaint about the show would be how they teased us into believing there would be an encore, but after five minutes of "ladies" filing into the backstage door (and I mean a lot of ladies), the lights went up and the show was abruptly over.

Opening band THE SELMANAIRES (also from Atlanta) were impressive as well, though the crowd looked like a scene from Night of the Living Dead throughout their set. Poor guys. They gave a lot of energy and deserved at least a little bit back.

Black Lips - Stranger (live at the Bowery Ballroom)

Tonight, both bands will be at The Music Hall of Williamsburg, but not before the Lips play a free show at Soundfix Records, then lead the audience on a circus parade to the Music Hall. This is guaranteed to be a spectacle!

BLACK LIPS - "Good Bad Not Evil"

BLACK LIPS are about to release the new album "Good Bad Not Evil" on Vice Records and it's gonna be huge. Read the very positive review over at Pitchfork Media. Quite simply, these guys rock in the good old fashion raw and rowdy kind of way. The album hits stores this coming Tuesday, September 11. Buy it!!!

Vice Records has a couple free downloads available, including the single 'Cold Hands'.

SAVATH & SAVALAS - "Golden Pollen"

Guillermo Scott Herren is a man of many musical styles, moods, and monikers. Most widely known as the man behind PREFUSE 73 and the excellent 2003 album "One Word Extinguisher", Herren now returns with the 3rd LP from SAVATH & SAVALAS titled "Golden Pollen".

Herren originally started out as a DJ in Atlanta, but is now based in Barcelona...and listening to a Savath & Savalas album makes you sort of feel like you've been swept off to an Almodovar-colored bungalow on an unpopulated hillside overlooking the Mediterranean Sea from the Spanish coast...no stress or troubles in sight, just endlessly easy beauty. At least that's what a Savath & Savalas experience does for me. Try it out for yourself (imagination required for full effect).

DEERHUNTER - "Fluorescent Grey EP"

According to Pitchfork Media, DEERHUNTER's new EP, "Fluorescent Grey" is quite good, as they declare it "Best New Music" and tag the release with an 8.8 rating.

If you aren't already familiar with DEERHUNTER'S latest album "Cryptograms", released in January on Kranky Records, do yourself a favor and check it out - deep psychedelic white noise, embodying elements of Chapterhouse, Sonic Youth, and early Blur.

Key tracks - "Strange Lights", "Cryptograms"

For a good laugh, read the "Sounds Like" section on their Myspace page - endless hate mail from Yeah Yeah Yeahs fans when Deerhunter opened for them.

DEERHUNTER - Cryptograms

Another great new band from Atlanta...DEERHUNTER's new LP 'Cryptograms' will be released on Kranky on January 29. I'm really into the title track and I love that they so forthrightly admit their influence...THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN, who are probably my favorite band ever...well, that's a big statement, but still...

SNOWDEN

Over the last few weeks, I've grown somewhat addicted to this band's first full-length album, "Anti-Anti". Ironically, the first time I heard SNOWDEN was via the LE CASTLE VANIA remix of 'Black Eyes', which takes their moody sound and turns it into a shakin' dance anthem. I became even more intrigued when I discovered the title track and recent single, 'Anti-Anti'. I was surprised to learn that a band who embodies the sounds of JOY DIVISION, INTERPOL, and ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN actually hails from Atlanta, Georgia.

SNOWDEN are touring the U.S. again real soon. I am hoping to catch their show with MALAJUBE at The Mercury Lounge, NYC on Feb. 18. Tickets go on sale tomorrow morning. For more tour dates or to listen to some tracks, visit their MySpace page.
