Thursday Night in Williamsburg: iPERO ANYWAYS! & CLUB NME

PROFESSIONAL AMATEUR Every Thursday Night at Capone's - Thursday March 1 iPero Anyways! with the marvelous DJ AS IF!

And before Professional Amateur, THE SKY REPORT will also be swinging by the CLUB NME show at Studio B in Greenpoint...LOVE AS LAUGHTER and STALKERS are headlining.

MENOMENA - "Friend and Foe"

Portland-based band MENOMENA released the quite fantastic new album "Friend and Foe" back in January. The excellent lead single Wet and Rusting is a must listen right now. Gorgeous piano, an urgent drum beat, and floating melancholy vocals...I've got this one on repeat.

OF MONTREAL - "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?"

I've been meaning to post something about OF MONTREAL for weeks now and I'm finally getting around to it. I'm really loving the new album, "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?" It's the kind of record that demands multiple listens in order to fully feel its punch, but it is well worth the time spent. Find out for yourself by streaming the entire album HERE. In my opinion it's the band's most solid effort yet.

But not only is the album quite remarkable, it seems their live shows have been getting rather interesting lately too. I've never seen the band live, but recent photos hint at a highly theatrical stage presence. In fact, at a recent gig in Las Vegas, lead singer Kevin Barnes performed fully naked for most of the set, wearing only a red cumberbun, fishnets and some make-up. For the X-RATED evidence, CLICK HERE (not if you are easily offended!) That said, Barnes is not likely to repeat the same shenanigan anytime soon, as the remaining U.S. dates are all 18+ shows. Unfortunately the NYC dates are both sold out, otherwise I'd totally be there.

Here's the positively bizarre video for the new single, "Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse".

The following was posted on B.R.M.C.'s Myspace page. I'm so excited! The last album, "Howl" was extraordinary. I'm really looking forward to the follow up, "BABY 81". Here goes:

"As promised, the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club single, "Weapon Of Choice" and album track, "666 Conducer" are available to listen to on the official web-site.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Both songs are taken from the new album, "Baby 81", due April 30 UK and Europe on Island Records and May 1, US and Canada on RCA.

The tracklist is as follows:

1. Took Out a Loan
2. Berlin
3. Weapon of Choice
4. Window
5. Cold Wind
6. Not What You Wanted
7. 666 Conducer
8. All You Do Is Talk
9. Lien on Your Dreams
10. Need Some Air
11. Killing the Light
12. American X
13. Am I Only

Baby 81 captures Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the most crucial time of their career. "I think we all took a leap of faith a little bit more on this album, writing more current songs," Robert reveals. "We used to hold on pretty tight to new songs, but it kind of feels like people are finally going to hear where we're at right now - we're much more in the moment.""

SLOW BURNING LIGHTS is the brand spankin' new project from CASUAL LUST vocalist Yes Alexander and the dark hip-hop outfit BLUE SKY BLACK DEATH. The result is absolutely gorgeous, somewhere in the vein of PORTISHEAD and MASSIVE ATTACK, but not at all 90's retro. Make sense? No? Who's damn good.

They may only have one track available for your listening pleasure as of yet, but it hints at what is to come - a full-length album rumored to hit the streets in April.

Please stop what you're doing right now and go listen to 'Secrets'.

CUT COPY "Hearts On Fire"

It's been a long time coming! CUT COPY are apparently finishing up their second album at the DFA studios in New York this month. "Bright Like Neon Love" remains one of my favorite albums of the last matter what my mood is like, it always sounds good.

The new single, "Hearts On Fire" takes the Aussie group in a slightly new direction, clearly finding influence in the unmistakeable bass lines of NEW ORDER by track's end. In any case, it's a great electro-dance track. Catchy. Hooky. Sugar-coated fun.

Hear the new single here!

MALAJUBE / SNOWDEN at The Mercury Lounge

MALAJUBE definitely stole the show at The Mercury Lounge Sunday night. Their set was very layered and complex and lead singer Julien Mineau has a wonderful charisma onstage, singing in a French rock n roll fervor. I wasn't really expecting to be so impressed with this band, so I was pleasantly surprised.

I had really went to see the headliner SNOWDEN who were also really good, yet sound issues plagued lead singer Jordan Jeffares' performance. It was such a shame, because he was clearly giving a lot, but his vocals were too muddled into the mix. The highlights were an inspired cover of THE ZOMBIES' classic "Time of the Season" and the standout track from Anti Anti, "Black Eyes".

All in all, pretty good show.

la grève générale

la grève générale are an awesome DJ duo from the UK who are, and I quote, "making electroclash a threat again".

These guys, Gav and John to be specific, create stellar mixes, interweaving new electro artists such as THIEVES LIKE US and SEBASTIAN for example, with older classics ranging from 70's glitter - ROXY MUSIC, vintage robot electro - GARY NUMAN, and 80's hip-hop - SALT N PEPA, resulting in pure crystalized fun.
